Pet reptile welfare is compromised by the gap between public perception of reptiles as 'easy' pets and the reality of their complex environmental needs. As ectotherms, reptiles cannot regulate body temperature independently and require precise thermal gradients to function normally. Without appropriate temperatures, immune function is impaired, digestion fails, and animals become progressively unwell in ways that are not obvious until disease is advanced. UVB lighting deficiency causes metabolic bone disease that causes fractures and deformity. Correct humidity is essential for normal shedding. Meeting these needs requires significant research, equipment investment, and ongoing monitoring.
