Welfare Considerations

Lameness causes persistent pain and significantly reduces quality of life for affected cattle. Cows with lameness show behavioral indicators of pain including teeth grinding, reluctance to walk, and altered posture. Pain management using NSAIDs is critical alongside foot treatment. Preventive measures including regular foot trimming, good housing surfaces, and appropriate nutrition reduce incidence substantially.

What You Can Do

Implement regular locomotion scoring (at least monthly) across the whole herd
Ensure prompt treatment with appropriate pain relief for all lame animals
Improve cubicle design with adequate bedding and appropriate dimensions
Maintain clean, non-slip walking surfaces and passageways
