The acute distress of mother-calf separation is well documented and represents one of the most significant individual welfare impacts in dairy production. Both cow and calf show clear behavioral indicators of distress: increased vocalization, reduced feed intake, altered movement patterns, and disrupted sleep. The mother-offspring bond in cattle is strong, making separation deeply stressful. Extended contact systems require adaptation of farm management but produce measurable welfare benefits and increasingly command premium prices from welfare-conscious consumers.
