Welfare Considerations

Heatstroke causes rapid multi-organ failure, brain damage, and death within minutes in severe cases. Dogs left in cars, exercised in midday heat, or kept in poorly ventilated spaces face significant risk. Brachycephalic breeds cannot pant efficiently and are at extreme risk even in mild warmth. Recognising early signs of overheating and responding rapidly saves lives. Public awareness campaigns have reduced but not eliminated preventable heatstroke deaths.

What You Can Do

Never leave a dog in a parked car, even briefly on mild days
Walk dogs early morning or evening during warm weather
Provide constant access to fresh water and shade
Know the signs: excessive panting, drooling, red gums, collapse
Cool an overheating dog with tepid water and seek emergency vet care immediately
