Separation anxiety is one of the most common and distressing behavioural problems in pet dogs, causing suffering for animals and owners alike.
Separation anxiety causes genuine panic and distress in affected dogs, representing a significant welfare problem that is often misunderstood or punished by frustrated owners. Dogs with separation anxiety are not being naughty but are experiencing a fear response to absence of attachment figures. Treatment must be gradual, consistent, and cannot be rushed. Flooding through extended absences worsens the condition. Medications including fluoxetine and clomipramine are evidence-based adjuncts to behaviour therapy. Early intervention and prevention through puppy socialisation substantially reduces incidence.
