Environmental Enrichment for Pigs: Evidence from Research

Research into pig enrichment has expanded significantly, demonstrating the types, quantities, and novelty needed to meaningfully improve welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The science of pig enrichment has clarified that not all enrichment is equal: objects must be destructible, chewable, rootable, and preferably food-related to satisfy core motivations. Static metal chains and rubber rings that cannot be manipulated meaningfully are frequently provided but have limited welfare benefit. Straw bedding satisfies multiple behavioural drives simultaneously and is the most comprehensively validated enrichment across different pig systems. The challenge for intensive producers is providing adequate straw without creating slurry management problems, which has driven development of enrichment dispensers and restricted straw provision systems.
