Atlantic cod aquaculture is an emerging industry in Norway and Iceland, with welfare questions that parallel those for salmon but with important species differences.
Cod farming faces species-specific welfare challenges including high stress sensitivity during handling, premature sexual maturation that causes welfare and production problems, and disease susceptibility. Cod in sea cages that mature prematurely spend energy on reproduction rather than growth and show increased aggression and reduced feed intake. Light manipulation to prevent maturation has welfare implications through disruption of natural cycles. The species sensitivity to handling stress means that routine farm operations including grading and vaccinating carry higher welfare costs per individual than in salmon. Welfare standards for cod farming are being developed but lag behind those for salmon.
