Common seal pups are born in June and July and are uniquely vulnerable to maternal separation and hypothermia if disturbed by humans approaching too closely during the early nursing period.
Common seal pup welfare is acutely sensitive to human disturbance during the nursing period. Well-intentioned members of the public approaching pups to photograph them can cause maternal abandonment resulting in starvation. Pups found alone on beaches are not necessarily abandoned and should be observed from a distance for at least 24 hours before seeking assistance.
