Dairy Transition Period: Managing the Most Critical Welfare Window

The three weeks before and after calving represent the highest-risk welfare period for dairy cows, requiring intensive management to prevent disease and suffering.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The transition period from dry cow to lactating cow is the period of highest metabolic demand and greatest welfare risk in the dairy cow lifecycle. The shift from dry to lactating physiology requires enormous metabolic adaptations that go wrong in a significant proportion of cows each year. Disease clustering in the transition period means a cow that develops milk fever may subsequently develop mastitis, endometritis, and displaced abomasum through a cascade of immunosuppression and metabolic disruption. Preventing the first disease event through excellent transition management has a cascade-stopping effect on subsequent welfare problems. The economic cost of transition diseases also creates strong commercial incentive for welfare investment in this period.
