Environmental enrichment is essential for pig welfare, reducing harmful behaviours and improving psychological wellbeing in farm settings.
Pigs are intelligent, curious animals with strong behavioural needs to root, explore and manipulate their environment. Barren environments cause chronic frustration, boredom and redirected behaviours including tail and ear biting that spread rapidly through groups. Enrichment provision is therefore not optional but a fundamental requirement for adequate welfare. Research shows that effective enrichment requires multiple materials, novelty and accessibility throughout the day.
