Guinea Pig Housing: Space, Social Needs and Enrichment

Guinea pigs require far more space than typically provided, along with compatible companions and environmental enrichment to meet their welfare needs.

The minimum recommended space for two guinea pigs is 120 x 60 cm but larger is better
Guinea pigs are highly social and should never be kept alone
They require constant access to hay, which should make up 80% of their diet

Welfare Considerations

Guinea pigs are frequently housed in spaces far too small to meet their behavioural needs, preventing normal locomotion, play and social interaction. Commercial cages marketed for guinea pigs typically fall well below welfare standards. Solitary housing causes chronic stress and depression. Hay deprivation leads to dental disease. Providing appropriate space, social housing, constant hay and environmental enrichment prevents most welfare problems seen in pet guinea pigs.

What You Can Do

Provide at least 2 square metres of floor space for a pair of guinea pigs
Always house guinea pigs with compatible companions of the same species
Ensure constant access to fresh hay, water, leafy greens and vitamin C
Create enrichment using cardboard tunnels, hiding places and foraging opportunities
