Farrowing crate alternatives are being developed and trialled across Europe as the industry responds to welfare concerns and legislative pressure.
Farrowing crates prevent sows from performing natural nesting behaviour, turning around, or interacting normally with piglets during a vulnerable and stressful period. The physiological and psychological costs are significant. Alternative systems that provide nesting materials and freedom of movement allow sows to express highly motivated nesting behaviour, reducing stress hormones and improving maternal behaviour. Advances in pen design have substantially reduced piglet crushing, the main reason crates were introduced.
