Ospreys returned naturally to Scotland in 1954 after 50 years of extinction and have since recovered to over 300 breeding pairs through dedicated conservation.
Osprey welfare is threatened during migration by power lines, illegal shooting in some countries and disturbance at nest sites. Individual birds tracked by satellite have shown gruelling non-stop sea crossings and deaths from collision and persecution in southern Europe and Africa. Protecting nest sites in Britain, advocacy for raptor protection along migration routes and engaging communities in destination countries all contribute to welfare outcomes for individual birds in addition to population recovery.
