Crowding is a major welfare stressor for farmed Atlantic salmon, occurring routinely during feeding, harvesting and health treatments.
Salmon are active, wide-ranging fish that experience severe stress when confined at high density. Crowding events that occur dozens of times during the production cycle contribute significantly to cumulative welfare burden. Research has established clear dose-response relationships between crowding intensity, duration and welfare outcomes. Minimising the frequency and duration of crowding events, improving crowding technique and monitoring fish behaviour during crowding can meaningfully reduce welfare costs even within current production systems.
