Chronic kidney disease affects the majority of cats over 15 years old and requires ongoing management to maintain quality of life.
CKD causes progressive decline in quality of life through uraemia, nausea, reduced appetite, dehydration and weakness. Cats in uncontrolled CKD experience chronic nausea comparable to persistent motion sickness. Proactive management through diet, phosphate binders, fluid therapy and anti-nausea medication significantly extends comfortable life and delays deterioration. Regular monitoring allows treatment adjustment as disease progresses, maintaining quality of life for longer than untreated or minimally managed CKD.
