Crate training is widely recommended for dogs but its welfare implications depend critically on how it is used. Misuse can cause suffering; appropriate use can provide genuine security for some dogs.
The welfare impact of crate use is highly individual and context-dependent. Dogs that have been properly crate trained using positive reinforcement, with the crate door remaining open when not needed, and without excessive confinement, can view crates as refuges. However, dogs confined in crates for more than 4 hours daily show measurable welfare deterioration including repetitive behaviours, increased cortisol and reduced social interaction. Puppies are particularly vulnerable to negative crate experiences that create lasting anxiety. The RSPCA advocates that crates should never be used as a punishment and that no dog should spend more than a few hours per day confined. Alternatives including baby gates and dog-proof rooms achieve similar management goals without confinement stress.
