Welfare Considerations

Broiler chickens in barren high-density sheds face welfare challenges including leg pain from rapid muscle growth, boredom, fearfulness and inability to express natural behaviours including dust bathing, foraging and perching. The Better Chicken Commitment (BCC) — signed by major UK retailers — requires slower-growing breeds, lower stocking densities, natural light and enrichment from 2026. Research comparing standard and enriched housing shows that enriched birds have lower cortisol, less lameness and perform more natural behaviours, with no statistically significant reduction in feed conversion efficiency.
