Voluntary milking systems (robotic milking) give cows autonomy over their milking schedule, but welfare outcomes depend heavily on cow traffic management, nutrition and health monitoring protocols.
Robotic milking offers genuine welfare benefits: cows visit the robot at their own pace, reducing the stress of being herded to a milking parlour. However, cows with high social rank may prevent lower-ranking animals from accessing the robot — a welfare concern in free-flow systems requiring management. Lameness detection through gait analysis algorithms allows early intervention before welfare deterioration. Farms using robotic milking that also provide adequate lying space, proper nutrition and proactive lameness management consistently show lower lameness prevalence than conventional herds.
