Blue mussel farming is among the most environmentally sustainable aquaculture types, with welfare considerations largely centred on harvesting and sentience uncertainty.
Blue mussel welfare is an area of significant scientific uncertainty. Their nervous systems lack the complexity associated with pain experience in vertebrates, and current evidence does not strongly support their sentience. However, the precautionary principle suggests minimising unnecessary physical damage during harvesting. Rope culture methods that avoid the crushing and injury associated with dredging represent a welfare-precautionary choice as well as an environmental one. As mussel farming continues to grow as a sustainable protein source, maintaining attention to emerging welfare science is appropriate.
