Welfare Considerations

Urban fox welfare is affected by human attitudes ranging from active feeding and support to deliberate persecution. Foxes with mange experience progressive fur loss, intense itching and secondary infections that cause suffering over months before death. Mange treatment with homeopathic drops placed in food is available and effective, preventing this suffering. Road mortality causes acute deaths and injured foxes may survive in pain before dying or being found by rescue services. Urban foxes that are healthy and well-established in territories live lives comparable in quality to rural foxes.
