The grey wagtail, with its bright yellow underparts, is closely associated with fast-flowing streams and rivers. Its welfare reflects the health of upland waterways and their invertebrate communities.
Grey wagtail welfare is affected by two primary stressors: cold winters that freeze stream banks preventing foraging access, and water quality deterioration that reduces aquatic invertebrate food supply. Unlike dippers, grey wagtails are surface foragers rather than underwater swimmers — they are somewhat more tolerant of slightly turbid water but still require a healthy aquatic invertebrate community. Bridges that provide nest sites near suitable foraging stretches are important breeding infrastructure — bridge maintenance that removes old cavities without providing alternative nest sites eliminates breeding territories. Installing artificial nest sites under bridges can compensate for lost natural cavities.
