Sea trout (anadromous brown trout) occupy an uncertain position between wild conservation and aquaculture contexts.
Sea trout welfare at the wild-aquaculture interface demonstrates how intensive farming affects wild populations beyond the farm boundary. Sea lice loads from salmon farms can be extremely high on wild sea trout passing in proximity, causing skin damage and secondary infection. Individual sea trout in river systems near salmon farms carry dramatically higher lice burdens than those in areas without farms. Regulatory separation of salmon farms from key sea trout migration routes and lice management requirements are the primary welfare interventions available for this interface problem.
