Escaped farmed salmon face a dramatic transition from the predictable, food-abundant sea cage environment to the challenges of open-water survival. Fish that have been fed to satiation on a regular schedule must rapidly learn to forage for wild prey while navigating unfamiliar environments and avoiding predators. Many escaped fish show poor body condition within weeks of escape, reflecting the difficulty of this transition. Escaped fish that enter rivers to breed with wild salmon impose genetic welfare costs on wild populations whose locally-adapted traits are diluted through hybridisation. Preventing escape through cage integrity is therefore a welfare intervention for both escaped individuals and wild salmon populations.
