Effective pain management in farm animals is both an ethical obligation and a welfare science priority. Despite legal requirements for pain relief in several procedures, compliance and awareness gaps remain significant.
Pain management on farms has improved significantly but large gaps remain. Validated pain assessment tools — including facial action unit scoring (grimace scales) for cattle, pigs, sheep and horses — allow objective identification of pain that stockpeople previously had to judge subjectively. However, tool adoption in practice is slow. Anti-inflammatory drug costs and regulatory compliance complexity reduce uptake by smaller producers. The welfare case for proactive pain management is clear: animals in pain eat less, grow less efficiently and have weaker immune responses — pain management is also economically rational. Veterinary-farmer partnerships with clear pain management protocols produce measurably better welfare outcomes.
