Atlantic mackerel are caught in enormous quantities by commercial fisheries, and their welfare during capture and slaughter deserves consideration.
The scale of mackerel fisheries means that even small improvements in slaughter or handling practices affect enormous numbers of sentient animals. Mackerel show stress responses during capture and die slowly from asphyxiation on deck. Research into more humane slaughter methods for pelagic species is urgently needed.
