Space Allowances and Density in Chicken Production

The space available to individual chickens in commercial production has a direct and measurable effect on behaviour, health, and welfare outcomes.

Higher welfare standards typically require 30 kg per square metre maximum

Welfare Considerations

High stocking densities create competition for resources, impair natural locomotion, and degrade air quality through increased ammonia. Birds at the back of crowded houses cannot access feed and water readily. Reducing stocking density is one of the most evidence-supported and impactful welfare improvements available in broiler production.
