Free-range turkey production aims to improve welfare by providing outdoor access and lower stocking densities compared to conventional indoor systems.
Access to outdoor range allows turkeys to express natural foraging and exploratory behaviours. However, range use is often limited in commercial free-range systems due to flock size and weather. Stocking density management and enrichment provision are key to maximising the welfare benefits of free-range production.
