Water quality is foundational to fish welfare in aquaculture systems, with oxygen, temperature, ammonia, and CO2 levels all directly affecting fish health and behaviour.
Fish in poor water quality suffer physiological stress including increased cortisol levels, impaired immune function, and in severe cases, asphyxiation. Chronic exposure to suboptimal water quality is common in high-density production systems where waste accumulates rapidly. Good water quality management is both a welfare and production imperative.
