The genetics of broiler chickens have been intensively selected for rapid growth, creating breeds with serious welfare problems that alternative breeds can largely avoid.
Fast-growing broilers live in a state of chronic physiological stress due to the demands their body size places on underdeveloped skeletal and cardiovascular systems. Lameness causes pain and prevents access to food and water. Transitioning to slower-growing breeds with enriched environments is the single most impactful intervention available for broiler welfare improvement.
