Pet Rat Welfare: Social Needs and Health

Domestic rats are intelligent social animals with complex welfare needs that are frequently underestimated by owners and poorly provided for in commercial small animal housing.

Welfare Considerations

Solitary rats show chronic stress indicators and reduced welfare compared to socially housed animals. Most commercial rat cages are too small to provide adequate exercise and exploration space. Respiratory disease, often caused by Mycoplasma pulmonis, causes significant suffering in many pet rats and requires prompt veterinary attention. Despite their short lifespan, rats can have rich, high-quality lives with appropriate care.

What You Can Do

Always keep rats in groups of at least two same-sex individuals
Provide cages with multiple levels, hammocks, and enrichment for climbing and exploration
Handle rats regularly from a young age to build a trusting human-animal bond
Register with a vet experienced in small animals and attend annual health checks
Source rats from reputable breeders who prioritise health and socialisation
