Chronic kidney disease is the most common serious illness in older cats and a major source of welfare burden affecting millions of cats worldwide.
Cats with advanced CKD experience chronic nausea, reduced quality of life, and end-stage uraemia that is deeply unpleasant. Regular veterinary monitoring of older cats allows early intervention that extends good quality life. Owner recognition of subtle signs including increased water intake and weight loss is critical. Timely euthanasia when quality of life cannot be maintained is an important welfare consideration.
