Play is a fundamental welfare need for cats that is often inadequately provided for in indoor settings, contributing to behavioural problems and frustration.

Welfare Considerations

Cats deprived of play opportunities become frustrated and may develop behavioural problems including aggression, destruction, and excessive vocalisation. Simply providing toys is insufficient; interactive play with a moving lure that mimics prey behaviour is most effective. Providing cats with opportunities to hunt, catch, and bite prey-like objects satisfies core behavioural needs and improves welfare significantly.

What You Can Do

Engage your cat in interactive play with a wand toy at least twice daily
Allow cats to catch and bite the toy at the end of play to satisfy predatory sequence
Rotate toys to maintain novelty and prevent habituation
Provide puzzle feeders that require hunting behaviour to release food
Avoid using hands and feet as play objects which encourages biting of people
