Wrasse Cleaner Fish Welfare in Salmon Farming

Ballan wrasse and lumpsucker wrasse are used as biological sea lice control in salmon farms. Their welfare is increasingly recognised as a significant concern — mortality rates are high and housing conditions are often inadequate.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Cleaner fish welfare in salmon farming has been described as a welfare crisis within a welfare solution. Wrasse and lumpsucker placed in salmon cages to eat sea lice face multiple welfare challenges: aggression from salmon, inadequate shelter, incorrect water temperatures (wrasse are warm-water fish deployed in cold Scottish waters), disease exposure and starvation when lice loads are low. Annual mortality rates of 70-90% represent welfare failure on a massive scale. ASC and RSPCA Assured standards now include cleaner fish welfare requirements, but implementation lags behind the problem. Salmon farmers face a genuine dilemma — sea lice cause salmon welfare harm, but the biological solution creates cleaner fish welfare harm.
