Sparrowhawks are the most common garden bird predators in the UK. Their welfare and the welfare of their prey both matter — understanding the ecological context prevents misguided persecution of this protected raptor.
Sparrowhawk welfare involves two layers of consideration. For individual sparrowhawks, persecution by people who blame them for songbird decline is both illegal and ecologically unjustified — decades of BTO research show sparrowhawk predation does not drive garden songbird population trends. For prey species, being taken by a sparrowhawk is a natural mortality source rather than a welfare concern at population level. Individual prey birds that are killed or injure themselves escaping (by flying into windows) represent welfare events. Net installations around feeders to prevent sparrowhawk strikes — rather than removing feeders — is a welfare-respecting management option.
