Hare coursing, in which greyhounds chase live brown hares, causes significant welfare harm and has been illegal in England and Wales since 2004 but continues as an illegal activity.
Hares caught by coursing dogs suffer severe trauma from dog bites and mauling. Even hares that escape may be injured and die later from wounds or exhaustion. The stress of pursuit itself causes significant welfare harm regardless of whether the hare is caught. Reporting illegal coursing and supporting police enforcement are the primary welfare interventions available.
