Parrots are among the most cognitively complex companion animals, and their welfare needs are frequently inadequately met in domestic settings, causing significant suffering.
Parrots deprived of cognitive stimulation, social contact, and physical exercise develop feather destructive behaviour, stereotypic patterns, and psychological distress analogous to human mental illness. Many parrots are kept in conditions that cause chronic suffering across lifetimes of up to 80 years. The complexity of parrot welfare requirements means they are rarely fully met even by well-intentioned owners.
