Thunderstorm phobia is a common and distressing condition in dogs that causes acute suffering during storms and can generalise to other noise-related fears.
Dogs with thunderstorm phobia experience severe fear responses during storms including trembling, panting, escape behaviour, and in severe cases self-injury. The suffering is acute and intense. Early intervention with behaviour modification, environmental management, and where appropriate anti-anxiety medication can significantly reduce the welfare burden of this common condition.
