The dark green fritillary is one of the UK's fastest and most powerful butterflies, found on coastal dunes, chalk downland and woodland rides. Its welfare depends on violet plants and open sunny habitats with nectar-rich flowers.

Loss of traditional cattle-grazed chalk downland eliminates both requirements — without grazing, grassland becomes rank and violet populations decline under competing coarser vegetation. Coastal sites maintained by natural processes (dune erosion, rabbit grazing) often retain better violet populations than inland sites. Butterfly Conservation translocations from stronger coastal populations to restored downland sites have shown limited success — suggesting habitat quality must be established before populations will naturally recolonise or translocation succeeds.
