Welfare Considerations

Goldfish kept in small bowls suffer from ammonia poisoning, inadequate oxygen, and temperature extremes that cause chronic stress and early death. Their cognitive complexity means environmental deprivation causes welfare harm beyond mere physical discomfort. Providing appropriate large tank or pond conditions, good filtration, and conspecific company allows goldfish to live long, healthy lives.

What You Can Do

Provide at minimum a 100-litre tank with filtration for a single goldfish
Never keep goldfish in bowls or small tanks as a long-term home
Ensure garden ponds have shallow areas for temperature regulation and deep areas to avoid freezing
Test water quality regularly and maintain appropriate parameters
Register with a vet experienced in fish for health issues
