Separation-related behaviour in dogs causes significant and often chronic welfare harm that can go unrecognised because it occurs when owners are absent.
Dogs experiencing separation anxiety undergo acute fear and distress during every period of owner absence. This chronic negative emotional state significantly reduces quality of life. The condition responds well to structured behavioural intervention including graduated absence training and where appropriate anxiolytic medication. Prevention through early training in alone time is far more effective than treatment of established separation anxiety.
