Dairy goat kid welfare involves two interlinked issues. Unlike dairy cattle where separation is near-universal, some goat farms are experimenting with extended suckling periods as a welfare improvement. Male kid welfare historically involved killing at birth — a swift death that avoids the welfare cost of inappropriate rearing. However, development of markets for goat kid meat, crossed with beef breeds, and extended suckling systems provides more welfare-positive alternatives. Goats killed at birth are not required to be stunned under current UK law if slaughtered by an approved method — a welfare gap that requires regulatory attention.
