The common blue damselfly is one of the most familiar pond insects in the UK. While still widespread, its welfare is affected by water quality deterioration, pond loss and the use of garden chemicals that destroy aquatic insect communities.

Common blue damselfly welfare as an individual and as a population depends on water quality in ponds and slow-moving water. Nutrient enrichment from garden fertiliser run-off causes algal blooms that reduce oxygen levels and kill the invertebrate communities on which damselfly nymphs depend. Pond treatments using chemicals to control algae eliminate non-target aquatic invertebrates including damselfly nymphs. Allowing garden ponds to develop naturally — with aquatic plants providing oxygen and structure — produces the water quality damselfly larvae require. Fish in garden ponds eat both nymphs and adult damselflies laying eggs, making fish-free ponds strongly preferable for damselfly welfare. The near-universal availability of this species means individual ponds can contribute meaningfully to local populations.
