Hamster Welfare: Misunderstood Needs

Hamsters are among the most commonly mistreated small pets due to widespread misconceptions about their needs, particularly regarding space and nocturnal activity.

Welfare Considerations

Hamsters kept in small commercial cages with insufficient substrate cannot express natural behaviours including burrowing, extensive foraging, and nocturnal activity. The chronic frustration of these strong motivations causes stereotypic bar chewing and cage running that are welfare indicators. Provision of appropriate large housing with deep substrate, a solid exercise wheel, and nocturnal access to activity space transforms hamster welfare outcomes.

What You Can Do

Provide a cage of at least 80x50cm floor area with 20cm+ of deep substrate
Never use mesh or barred exercise wheels as these injure hamster feet
Handle hamsters only in the evening when they are naturally active
Keep hamsters singly unless keeping species that can be housed in pairs
Research hamster welfare before acquiring one and provide appropriate housing from the start
