Welfare Considerations

Bat roost disturbance causes direct welfare harms including abandonment of young, disruption of torpor, and energy depletion. Maternity colonies are particularly vulnerable; pups separated from mothers during disturbance have very low survival rates. Legal protection must be actively enforced, and wildlife surveys before renovation are essential. Bat boxes can partially compensate for roost loss but are not equivalent to natural roosts.
