The golden oriole, with its extraordinary fluting song and brilliant yellow plumage, is now an extremely rare UK breeder. Its welfare depends on mature poplar plantations in East Anglia — a disappearing habitat.
Golden oriole welfare as a UK breeding species is near-terminal. The poplar plantations of the Fens and East Anglia that supported breeding colonies have been felled as commercial timber production ceased to be economic, and replacement with arable or grassland has eliminated the canopy habitat. Remaining breeders are at Suffolk sites with mature poplars. Without active plantation management to maintain mature poplar canopy, breeding golden orioles will cease in the UK. As a passage migrant, golden orioles are also affected by habitat loss in Mediterranean wintering areas and across the African wintering range. The welfare of individual birds in the remaining breeding sites requires absolute disturbance protection.
