The pintail, with its elegant long tail and chocolate-brown head, is one of the most graceful of UK ducks. The breeding population is tiny but up to 30,000 winter in UK estuaries each year.
Pintail welfare at wintering estuaries is particularly sensitive to disturbance. Research shows pintail flush at greater distances than other dabbling ducks — up to 300m from approaching people. Repeated disturbance causes significant energy expenditure and limits feeding time. Estuaries with high recreational use by walkers, dogs and wildfowlers see pintail use lower-disturbance areas, potentially of lower food quality. Mudflat food availability is affected by the same climate and sea level change pressures affecting other estuarine waders and wildfowl. Marine protected area designation and disturbance management at key estuary sites directly improves pintail wintering welfare.
