Castration of Beef Cattle and Welfare

Castration of bull calves is routine in beef production but causes significant pain that requires adequate anaesthesia and analgesia.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Castration causes acute and prolonged pain that is often inadequately managed in cattle production. Pain responses to castration persist for hours to days regardless of method used. Local anaesthetic reduces acute pain during the procedure but does not address post-procedural pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are effective at reducing post-procedural pain and should be routine. Minimum age at castration recommendations and pain relief protocols should be standard practice across all beef systems.
