Hamsters are kept as pets by millions of people but their welfare needs are frequently misunderstood, with traditional housing causing chronic suffering.
The majority of pet hamsters in the UK and Europe live in housing that causes chronic welfare suffering. Traditional small cages prevent natural locomotion, burrowing, and foraging behaviour. Hamsters kept in inadequate conditions develop stereotypic bar-gnawing as a coping response to frustration. Solitary housing is appropriate for Syrian hamsters but social housing is required for dwarf species. The mismatch between commercial pet industry standards and genuine hamster welfare requirements is a persistent problem requiring consumer education and regulatory intervention.
