Adequate space during transport is essential for livestock welfare, but current regulations often fall short of animal needs.
Livestock transport space allowances that merely meet minimum regulatory requirements often fail to provide adequate welfare. Pigs at minimum space allowances cannot all lie simultaneously, forcing some animals to stand for entire journeys. Cattle that fall during transport risk serious injury and are unable to rise in crowded conditions. EFSA scientific opinions consistently recommend higher space allowances than those currently mandated. The gap between regulatory minimums and animal welfare science needs represents a persistent policy failure.
