North American wolverines depend on persistent spring snow for denning and are among the species most threatened by climate warming.
Loss of spring snow causes den collapse and kit mortality, representing significant suffering at the population level. Trapping causes prolonged pain and distress. Wolverines have extremely large territories and low population densities; any mortality has disproportionate population impacts. Climate stress may increase exposure to pathogens as ranges shift.
